JOHN FINDLAY MSc CEng MCIWEM FGS
John is Director of Carbon Zero Consulting Ltd, which he founded in 2007. John is a Chartered Engineer with 34 years of international engineering project management and geosciences experience. His work has ranged from oil exploration and water resource management to renewable energy design and installation. He has managed projects to drill boreholes all over the world to extract oil, gas, water – and energy!
In addition to water supply and water treatment projects for clients including Nestlé, Müller, Kellogg, major dairies and others, John has played a major role in the development of Ground Source Heating and Cooling (GSHC) technology. This has included close involvement in many of the UK’s larger public and private sector schemes. John is a council member of the GSHPA, engaged with the development of new standards GSHP installation. He is also a technical advisor to OFGEM and provided input to the Environment Agency Good Practice Guidelines, the BGS open loop screening tool and the CIBSE code of practice for WSHPs.
John has been involved in many of the practical details of GSHC scheme design from feasibility through design to commissioning and monitoring of performance. Some of these schemes are the largest currently in place in the UK supplying heat (and cooling) to large public and private sector buildings such as schools, colleges, offices and retail developments. John introduced a new technology to the UK for measurement of soil thermal properties in situ. This is now being widely used as an aid to good shallow ground loop design.
With an exemplary track record, John Findlay is well respected and well known in the water and GSHP sectors and can often to be found presenting at technical seminars and conferences.
Beyond the working day, John is a keen sportsman, captaining his local cricket team, swimming and walking (the latter mostly on Cornish cliffs) and is a lifelong Bath Rugby supporter having enjoyed playing the game for most of his life – the blue, black & white of Bath being reflected in the company colour scheme!
LAWRENCE SCOTT MGeol, FGS
Lawrence is a masters Geology graduate from the University of Plymouth which included a rather chilly mapping trip to the Arctic Circle. Lawrence is now running with various field and office-based projects at Carbon Zero Consulting, including data monitoring for a novel GSHP installation, soil thermal conductivity surveys, thermal response tests (TRT) and borehole water sampling and testing.
PAUL LEEDHAM BEng, MSc, MIET
Paul owns and manages Matrix Energy Systems Ltd, a multi-award-winning renewable energy design and installation company. The expertise of Paul and his team within plant room design combines very well with Carbon Zero Consulting’s knowledge of ‘the ground’ and provides clients with a very powerful team!
Matrix provides the following input to projects with CZC: Heat Loss Calculations, SAP and RdSAP, system design, specification and integration of Ground Source and Air Source Heat Pump systems of all scales.
KEVIN SABIN CEng, MSc, BEng, MCIBSE
Another native of Rutland, and sharing offices with Carbon Zero Consulting, Kevin is an experienced Building Services Engineer with particular expertise in environmental design, energy efficient system design, building physics, natural ventilation and renewable energy systems.
He is a Corporate Member of CIBSE, a Chartered Engineer and has qualified as a BREEAM assessor and Accredited Professional. With over 17 years of work experience, Kevin’s career encompasses a wide variety of projects in business sectors ranging from education, hospitals, residential, manufacturing and commercial offices.
His notable career highlights include the first new build PFI General Hospital, integration of ground source heat pumps, biomass and solar thermal technologies into a variety of education projects. More recently Kevin has had direct design experience of biomass and heat pump installations that have achieved eligibility with RHI.
DR. ROBIN CURTIS BSc, PhD, CEng, MEI
Robin is Director of GeoScience Ltd based in Falmouth, Cornwall. He became involved in geothermal energy in 1984, working at the UK Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Project in Cornwall. He subsequently developed an interest in GSHP technology and since 1992 has been responsible for the introduction
and promotion of these systems in the UK. He is widely known as the foremost technical specialist on GSHP systems in the UK. He has been involved in the design, installation and commissioning of a wide variety of GSHP systems ranging from the smallest social housing installations through to some of the largest closed loop projects in the UK to date.
Dr Curtis is the author of several papers and numerous articles on the subject of GSHPs. He is a GSHPA council member, and is involved in a number of UK and EU GSHP training initiatives and the development of thermal and hydraulic sizing guidance for the MCS Installation standards.
DAVID BANKS MSc, FGS, CGeol, MIAH
Dave is owner and Director of Holymoor Consultancy Ltd. Dave has over 25 years professional hydrogeology experience from all sectors: consultancy, research, public and academia. It was also while in Norway that Dave first became interested in ground source heating and cooling. It took several months to convince him that heat pumps really did work! On his return to the UK , Dave took up the challenge of persuading Britons that ground source heating and cooling could also be of relevance to their foggy & chilly island. The majority of Dave’s work with Carbon Zero involves some form of thermogeological consultancy, modelling, calculation – and training.
